What is an MVHR?

We install mechanical ventilation with heat recovery across Caithness and Sutherland, keeping air fresh in airtight homes without throwing away the heat. Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) is an innovative and energy-efficient technology designed to provide a continuous flow of fresh air while simultaneously recovering and reusing heat from the outgoing stale air. This system plays a crucial role in creating a healthier indoor environment and reducing energy consumption in buildings.

MVHR systems consist of a network of ducts, fans, and a heat exchanger. The process begins with fresh air being drawn from outside through a filter to remove impurities like dust and pollen. Simultaneously, stale indoor air is extracted from various rooms and directed through a separate set of ducts.

The heart of the MVHR system is the heat exchanger. This component allows the transfer of heat between the incoming fresh air and the outgoing stale air without the two streams mixing. There are two main types of heat exchangers used in MVHR systems: counter-flow and cross-flow.

  1. Counter-flow Heat Exchanger: In this design, the fresh air and stale air flow in opposite directions, maximizing the heat transfer efficiency.

  2. Cross-flow Heat Exchanger: Here, the fresh and stale air streams move perpendicular to each other. While it may have slightly lower efficiency than counter-flow, cross-flow exchangers are simpler and often more cost-effective.

The key advantage of MVHR systems lies in their ability to recover and reuse heat that would otherwise be lost. By extracting heat from the outgoing air and transferring it to the incoming fresh air, MVHR systems significantly reduce the need for additional heating, especially in colder climates.
